It’s been an unusual few months for all of us. The world is feeling a little topsy turvy and our existence has been turned on it’s head. We can been forced to shift our lives in so many different areas. The tightly woven fabric of our previous lives has been dismantled. Now, as things begin to open up and people return to a new state of being, this can also cause surges of anxiousness.
What will this new normal look like? Have I processed this time enough globally and personally? I feel nervous about this shift. I’m not ready yet! These are all valid thoughts and concerns.
There are a few ways that we can help ground our energy in anxious times. These can assist for a second, a minute or an hour. You can swap these techniques as some may resonate one moment and some may resonate in the next. Be patient with your process. Tread lightly with your emotions. Remember, you are entitled to the full breadth of human experience. Here are my tips for grounding during anxious times:
Nurture your Plant Babies – Outdoors or Indoors
It’s the season for planting and Canadians everywhere are rejoicing. Connecting with the earth in its purest glory is a beautiful thing that can help ground you instantly. There’s something calming about having your hands in the dirt. Gardening is the great equalizer – plants don’t care who you are. They force you to be present with them and create a sense of nurturing something outside of yourself. Nurturing something outside of your emotions. The rhythmic associations of planting can help our minds ebb and flow, along with our methodical movements. This can be tremendously peaceful and grounding. Nature reminds us to be present and she does not judge. Working with plants you’ll be reminded of the cycles of birth and death – this may allow you to be more patient with yourself as well.
Stand Barefoot on the Ground
Now that we finally have a bit of grass peeking out from the snow it’s the perfect time to place bare feet on the healing earth. We can imagine our worries dripping down through the soles of our feet and deep into the center of the earth to be transmuted. Research has shown that barefoot contact with the earth produces nearly instant physiological change. These can assist with improving sleep, reducing pain and lowering stress. Physical contact with earth has also been shown to help regulate our autonomic nervous system. Reconnect with the earths electrons. Allow yourself to be held.
Prepare a meal – Sans Distractions!
Preparing a meal from start to finish is an excellent way to ground your energy. I’m serious when I mean I need you to turn off all media and distractions. You can put on some calming music with no lyrics. Be fully in the moment. Smell the spices simmering. Hear the oil crackling. When you find your mind wandering – gently redirect it to the sensations you are seeing, feeling and tasting. Be gentle with yourself. When you’re done, enjoy your meal and give gratitude to yourselves and the ingredients. I find stews and soups work best as we need to nurture a dish like that over a series of time.
There are so many ways to ground yourself. As the seasons shift from winter to spring into summer I highly encourage connecting with the natural elements of the earth to help you ground your energy and transmute frightening or discouraging emotions into stages of peace, harmony and acceptance.
