Listening Partnerships: An Answer to Parenting Stress

Our mental health and our physical health are interconnected. The Naturmend team includes two mental health clinicians because we recognize the importance of the body-mind connection. Today we present a way to decrease the mental stress of parenting.

Parenting is hard!

Do you ever feel like a failure as a parent? That your child is awful? Both? You are not alone!

Parenting is one of the most difficult, exhausting, and complex jobs in the world. Parenting doesn’t come with a training manual.  Much of the work of parenting is emotional work and we get little support for it.

Stress knocks out our prefrontal cortex

When parenting gets hard, we get stressed. When we are stressed, our prefrontal cortex—the thinking, reasoning, and judgement part of our brain—shuts down and a primitive part of our brain takes over. We can feel pressed to our limit and say or do things we wish we hadn’t.

How do we get out of our primitive brain? By being able to express our frustrations, fears, and regrets. When we have the opportunity to be heard, our nervous system re-regulates and our prefrontal cortex comes back online.

A Listening Partner for support

Parents can get support for the emotional work of parenting. It’s called a Listening Partner.

Imagine the perfect person to talk to—someone who listens and does not offer advice, ask questions, or judge you. They just listen with a warm and receptive presence.
