Healthier Pumpkin Spice Latte

Fall has arrived! There is something so magical about this time of year; the feeling of new beginnings is in the air, and the changing leaves and fall colours makes for a such a beautiful backdrop. And did I mention pumpkins? And pumpkin spice everything? There’s nothing that screams fall more than a hot beverage spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg!

As delicious as a typical pumpkin spice latte is, I think we can all agree that it is not the healthiest thing to consume! A certain pumpkin spice latte that many of us are used to hearing about (not naming any names…) has a whopping 50 g of sugar in the medium size. That is equal to 12.5 teaspoons of sugar, in 16 ounces of liquid. Could you imagine adding that much sugar to a regular cup of coffee? It just wouldn’t happen!!

Luckily, there is a better option that you can make right at home. This PSL actually contains real pumpkin puree, which is packed with antioxidants including high amounts of Vitamin A, a nutrient that is essential for vision. It is also high in fibre, and adequate fibre intake is vital for keeping your digestion system in check and can also play a role in reducing cholesterol levels.

The levels of spicy and sweet can be modified to your specific tastes, but please don’t add 12.5 tsp of sugar to this delicious drink!!

Pumpkin Spice Latte (serves 1)
  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil (or MCT oil)
  • 3 tbsp non-dairy milk (coconut is a great option)
  • 1 heaping tbsp pumpkin puree
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp raw & unpasteurized honey

Add all ingredients to a blender & blend until frothy!
Optional: sprinkle with extra pumpkin pie spice
