We have heard time and time again about the antioxidant value and health benefits of green tea. But what about matcha green tea? The process of making matcha involves finely grinding green tea leaves into a powder, which you then whisk or blend into a hot liquid. Ingesting the full leaf instead of just the steeped version means that you benefit from more of the antioxidants, nutrients, and detoxifying components!
Matcha contains caffeine, but it also contains an amino acid called l-theanine, which has been shown to promote relaxation and can also help to improve sleep. There have been studies that show that the combination of these two actually moderate the effect of caffeine on the body, which results in an extended feeling of mental alertness, and the elimination of the caffeine crash! Clear beneficial effects were found in regards to sustained attention, memory, and suppression of distraction. (1)
Enjoying matcha can be as simple as whisking the powder into a cup of hot water or a milk alternative. You can also enhance your morning beverage even more by turning it into an elixir! Here is one of my favourite matcha elixirs to start the day with.
Simple Matcha Elixir
- 1-2 cups Holy Basil tea
- 1-2 tsp matcha powder
- Scoop of collagen powder
- 1 tsp MCT oil
- Medjool date or 1 tsp raw & unpasteurized honey (to taste)
Combine all ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend until smooth.
