Embracing The Sacred Feminine

As I sit and write this, I can see out of the corner of my eye a massive “to-do” list of at least ten items. I have emails to answer, errands to run, people to connect with, meal plans to write and workouts to complete. I know that many of you have similar patterns of life. In our extraordinarily busy day-to-day bustle (which can easily feel like an endless spiral), it is unnerving how much of it is spent extending “yang” energy. This article is in honour of “Women’s Health Month” and falling on the heels of Mother’s Day. My intention in writing this is that I encourage every one of you to step into your receptive yin flow right now and embrace the beauty of the feminine.

What is Yang and Ying Energy?

When we speak about “yang or yin” energies, what we are talking about is two independent and yet very complimentary energies. These are considered two sides of the energetic coin and each person must learn how to balance both sides. Yin is considered female and passive and yang is the active masculine. Just off the top of your head, which one would you say that we value most as a society? In North America we place huge value on yang energy, and as a result many women are catapulting into very active masculine roles while failing to embrace their receptive. What is the result of this? Yang excess can create a whole host of issues including inflammation, heat, or emotional reactions like anger or aggression.

Ways to Raise Yin Energy
  • Slow Down. I’m not going to preface this sentence by saying something like “mediate every day” (although I think you should and you can read more about why you should here) but just take your time accomplishing tasks. Slow down when driving. Slow down when writing emails. Really take a moment to enter into a heart space before reacting. Walk more slowly. Eat more slowly. Remember yin is receptive, which means there is no need to actively create results. There is a need to allow results to enter in your life. Another way to incorporate this is to take time preparing nourishing meals (ever wonder why the “slow-cooked” movement is becoming such a force?) or participate in gentle movement like yoga nidra.
  • Honour your Intuitive Energy. Intuition is the foundation of the sacred feminine soul. In order to access your intuition properly, you must first learn how to feel your feelings. This can be absolutely terrifying as first, when we realize the enormity of the range of emotions available to us. Sometimes discovering our intuition might mean journeying deep within and meeting our inner “Mad Woman”. We also need to respect the wisdom that we get by acting upon our intuitive feelings properly. Get a weird vibe from someone? Don’t go on a date with them. Feel called to tell a fellow sister something you admire about her? Say it.
  • Beautify yourself and your surroundings. We’ve all (hopefully) had the experience of entering a room that is so beautiful that it seems to invigorate our bodies down to the tips of our toes. Seek to cultivate this feeling in the average space of the every day. Buy yourself the darn flowers. Not the grocery store kind – go to an artisan florist and create a bouquet that speaks to your heart. Cover yourself in soft and silky fabrics that resonate with you. Bring texture and colour into your space. Look at art. Buy items of clothing and items for your house that make you feel alive in a palette which makes you happy.
  • Learn to live from the heart. Opening the heart chakra can also be an uncomfortable experience, particularly if we have undergone a period of grief or sadness. The quickest way to open your heart chakra is to wear a deep, emerald green. Many people believe red or pink is the heart chakra color, but it’s actually green. This is why places that are very green often have a reputation of being healing (think Bali and Maui). You can also imagine a green light surrounding your heart and beaming out until it encompasses your entire body, your house, your neighbourhood, your city, the world. A very important factor to opening up your heart chakra space is to forgive those who have not respected and honoured you. This can be a difficult process and everyone is different with how they approach this. You may need to talk to someone. Naturmend has a wonderful psychologist. Read more about her here.

It is important to learn how to embrace the sacred yin energy in order to become more balanced. Strong and soft are words that can be used together. Emotions are powerful. Leading with the heart and stepping into the vast universal flow just feels so good.

what is the greatest lesson a woman should learn

that since day one

she’s already had everything she needs within herself

it’s the world that convinced her she did not
