Spring is just around the corner and you know what that means – a brigade of people looking to lose a few extra pounds. It’s true that as the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, there is a natural inclination to “get fit”. One dreams of short stampede dresses, feeling pretty in summer clothes, and being energetic enough to tackle all of the fun summer activities. Although weight loss is a great goal to have, it’s important to go about it in a safe and sustainable way. People who lose a lot of weight rapidly often have the consequence of gaining it back quickly. That being said, there are still things you can do to make your weight loss journey as sustainable as possible!
Go Organic Whenever You Can
Canadian researchers recently reported that dieters with the most organochlorines (pollutants from fat pesticides that are stored in fat cells) experience a greater than usual drop in metabolism as they lose weight. Scientists speculate that these toxins interfere in the energy-burning process. Pesticides therefore can make it harder to lose weight. These chemicals can also have a negative effect on numerous metabolic processes in the body. It makes sense that if we are on a weight loss journey to try to avoid these harmful products. I know that organics can be expensive. I always recommend to my clients that they take great care to follow the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen – 12 foods you should ALWAYS buy organic and 15 foods that are OK to purchase conventionally. Find the 2017 list here.
This is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies I see in my practice. ALL of the chemical reactions in your body, including your metabolic processes, depend on water. If you are dehydrated, your body will burn fewer calories. How do you know if you are dehydrated or not? Common signs include: thirst, dry mouth, less frequent urination accompanied by dark coloured urine, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, bad breath, muscle cramps and even cravings for sweets. Dehydration can affect a ton of different functions in the body, which is why it’s so important to get that under check! How can we ensure we are hydrated?
- ALWAYS have your water bottle handy and track your water!
- Spice up plain water by adding chunks of fruit or yummy herbs (I love mint).
- Try herbal teas.
- Eat plenty of water-rich foods like celery, cucumber, lettuce, leafy greens and tomatoes.

Your Body Needs to Feel Safe
What does this mean? When it comes to losing weight, many people submit their bodies to extreme and stressful conditions. This can make the body feel very unsafe, creating the opposite circumstances needed for weight loss! When the body is stressed, it will hold onto excess weight as a way of protecting itself and all of the soft and vulnerable inner organs. How can we make our bodies feel safe? Here are some ways:
- Don’t cut calories too drastically!
- Eat regular meals to show your body that it is getting fed on a regular basis
- Speak only kind and loving words to yourself.
- Your body is innately intelligent – respect it!
Track Your Eating and Drinking
If we are just going through our lives without being fully present, we are just zombies! We need to cultivate mindfulness so that when we do things we can easily identify the “why” behind our actions. Are you eating that second piece of pizza because you are truly hungry… or is it because you’re sad? Are you eating the bar of chocolate because you want to saviour the experience… or are you just upset? Tracking your eating and drinking habits is a great tip to keep you on a track. Write things down – pen and paper style! When you write things down honestly, where the only witness is you, it’s hard to avoid the feelings that come out. Keep a detailed food journal with the following information:
- Portion size
- Mood while eating
- Mood after eating
- Any physical or emotional symptoms
- Any other feelings that come to mind
Writing down things is the single most effective way to change a habit. Want to know more about the huge benefits of writing things down? Click here!
Move it, Shake it, Change it!
Look, your body knows when you are trying to be lazy and doing the same workout every day IS sort of lazy! You need to switch things up as your muscles can pick up on the repetitiveness and will literally do the same exercises on repeat while burning less calories. Shocking, I know! It’s a good idea to make sure that you continue to experiment with exercises that surprise your body and present a challenge. Keeping your body on it’s toes is linked to weight loss and can help prevent plateau. This doesn’t have to be boring either! There are SO many ways you can move your body that are actually enjoyable. Dancing? Rock-climbing? Diving class? The possibilities are endless!
