4 Tips For Fighting The Flu

The flu has hit Calgary again this year and hard. After watching my partner violently throw up Christmas morning and reading facebook status after status about being sick with the flu I decided it was probably necessary to send off a few of the best flu tips I could think of. Hopefully if you are sick you have someone willing to take care of you and grab you these supplies for battling this nasty virus. Also, if you haven’t been sick yet these tactics still apply to keep your immune system strong.

1. Rest

Cute dog in bedThis seems fairly obvious and sometimes you don’t have a choice but to rest, however getting loads of quality sleep during a period of any sickness is necessary for your body to recuperate itself. Sleep is where the magic happens, the time when your body is able to really do it’s own thing, without your brain getting in the way. Allowing this healing process to occur can mean the difference between a 3 day flu and a 7 day flu for some people.

2. Staying hydrated

This is an obvious one too and every doctor, nurse or health practitioner will say the same thing; when you are pushing out water on both ends you need to replenish or you risk dehydration. However instead of reaching for the gatorade (filled with high fructose corn syrup and other harmful colourings) go for something that will be sugar free but high in electrolytes. Your body needs to be replenished with minerals and water. Vega has an electrolyte hydrator  that is sugar free and excellent for providing your body with optimal hydration.

3. Bone Broth

There isn’t enough space on this page to list all the benefits of bone broth for the body. It is filled to the brim with nutrients like collagen, magnesium, potassium, silicon, glycine etc etc that provide your body with the tools it needs to heal and regenerate. Check out this link for the easiest bone broth recipe you’ll ever use and stock up your freezer for flu days.

4. Probiotics

Where to even start with probiotics.. they are the kings of your digestive tract. Without these healthy critters you would die, no exaggeration. It’s easy to get the impression that the probiotics are only beneficial if you have compromised digestion but they are also hugely necessary for the functioning of your immune system as well. Therefore it only makes sense that when you are experiencing diarrhea and vomiting from a virus that has hit your immune system that you would reach for the probiotics as a source of healing.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon!
